Jessie Leigh Metelko
Welcome to JLDC. My name is Jessie, I am 24 years of age and the principal of the Academy. I would like to briefly introduce myself and what JLDC has to offer.
I am originally from Australia and sport and activity has been a huge aspect of my life since I was quite young. Knowledge about the body and how to portray movement through sport whether being gymnastics or athletics has been second nature to me for a number of years. Being an active child has enabled me to live a happy and healthy lifestyle and I believe has set me up for the future to come.
At the age of 4 I began Women’s Artistic Gymnastics at Tea Tree Gully Gymsports. Alongside my Gymnastic commitments I was also involved in Athletics for quite a number of years. In 2002 I became involved in Highland Dancing through the Garrick Stewart School of Highland Dancing. Highland Dancing became my passion and due to the number of hours required for both gymnastics and Highland I stopped Women’s Gymnastics in 2007 and began competing Highland Dancing nationally and later internationally.
In 2009 alongside of my Highland Dancing I commenced Cheerleading under Tea Tree Gully Gymsports and competed at national and international competitions. Our Cheerleading team was very successful and we were International champions for a number of years.
I represented Australia in the Edinburgh Military Tattoo in Scotland in August, 2012 and in 2013 I was accepted into the Broadway Dance Centre in New York City and danced in this program 6 days a week for 6 months. In 2014 I danced with 26 other ‘Ozscot’ Australians in the Basel Tattoo in Switzerland and after Switzerland I was one of 3 Australians selected to dance in the Edinburgh Tattoo Commonwealth team.
I have a lot of experience teaching a variety of techniques including Gymnastics, Highland Dancing and Cheerleading from ages 4-16. I have trained in Ballet, Contemporary, Jazz, Hip hop, Tap and Theatre. I am also a qualified Gymnastics coach, IDTA dance teacher and Cheerleading Coach Levels 1-3.
At the beginning of 2014 I made the decision to move to the United Kingdom to live with my husband who is in the Royal Marines. I began teaching Cheerleading and Dance in Hampshire and found that there was not many Cheerleading opportunities available down the South of England. Over the past year JLDC has expanded quite considerably and we are so very excited for what’s to come.
